Ah, the truth hurts. And so can love.
As most of us know, a love relationship can stir up many different emotions. It can range from contentment to ecstasy on a good day, from hurt to hate on a bad day.
When I think about the relationships I have had in my life, I can honestly say that I’ve only had one that brought out every possible emotion I could imagine – from one extreme to the other. This was my romance with a musician we’ll call “BTR” (short for “Big Tall Rocker”). We were in our 20’s and I was the “older” woman… and if you know anything about musicians, I guess you can say I was destined to be dumped.
While I loved this man for bringing out a creative side of me I didn’t even know existed, I hated him for the hurt I felt when the relationship came to an end.
Whether you’re expecting it or not, a break-up never feels good. And the problem with a passionate relationship is that while the high is really high, the low, well, the low can be beyond unbearable.
Since then, I’ve had some “nice” relationships, but nothing quite as intense. And I find that even the nice relationships are fewer and farther between.
So, now, I have to ask myself…
Am I less passionate than I was in my late 20’s or have I just matured?
Have I become numb to being hurt or just more carefree?
Have I learned to protect myself by not allowing myself to fall quite so deeply or am I subconsciously picking emotionally (or geographically) unavailable men in order to avoid getting serious?
Or, could it be, now that I'm in my 40's, that I just like the alone time?
